Cold hair repair: what it is, who it suits and how often to do it

Colouring, bleaching, flat irons, sun and hard water gradually leave hair dry, brittle and dull. Cold repair is one of the most popular treatments for hair like this. Here is what it is, how it differs from other treatments and how many sessions you need to see results.

What cold hair repair is

It is a deep treatment in which the hair is saturated with nourishing and restorative formulas - without heat from a flat iron. Hence the name: unlike keratin straightening or "hair botox", the products work without high temperatures. The aim is to restore the structure of the hair strand and its moisture and lipid balance - giving hair back its hydration, density, softness and shine.

Cold repair does not change the shape of your hair or straighten it. Wavy hair stays wavy - it just becomes healthier-looking and easier to manage.

Who it suits

  • after colouring, highlights, balayage or total blonde;
  • if your hair is dry, porous, tangles easily and will not hold a style;
  • if the ends are split and the lengths look dull;
  • if you often use a flat iron or curling tongs;
  • after a seaside holiday - sun and salt water dry hair out a lot.

There is no age limit and the treatment suits any hair type. Before the first session your stylist will assess your hair and tailor the programme.

How the treatment works

First the hair is washed with a gentle shampoo so the products can penetrate better. Then the stylist applies the restorative formulas in layers, leaves them on for the right amount of time and finishes with a product that "seals in" the result. Finally, the hair is dried. It takes from 1 hour, depending on length, thickness and the programme.

How many sessions you need

Cold repair has a cumulative effect. It is done once every 1-2 weeks. Some hair only needs hydration and one or two treatments, while badly damaged hair needs a full course. Your stylist will tell you the exact number after the first visit, once they see how your hair responds.

What the price depends on

The price depends on hair length (measured in centimetres) and hair type. Bleached and very thick hair needs more product, so it has a separate rate. All options are listed in the price list on the Hair page.

Cold repair, keratin or "hair botox": the difference

These treatments are often confused, although they do different jobs. Keratin straightening changes the hair's texture, making it straight and smooth with a formula sealed in by a flat iron. "Hair botox" is usually sealed with heat too - it smooths and thickens hair but does not always straighten it. Cold repair works without high temperatures and focuses purely on care: the hair gets moisture and nutrients, while its natural curl pattern stays the same.

That makes cold repair a good choice if you want to keep your natural texture, if your hair is so weak that heat should be avoided, or if you are planning to colour and want to prepare your hair first.

Frequently asked questions

When will I see results? Most clients notice a difference after the first treatment: hair is softer, tangles less and shines. On badly damaged hair, lasting results come after a course.

How long does the effect last? It depends on the condition of your hair and your home care. That is why the treatment is repeated every 1-2 weeks until the hair becomes healthier, and then for maintenance.

Can it be combined with colouring? Yes. Repair is often done before or right after colouring so the colour goes on more evenly and stays vibrant longer. Your stylist will advise on the right order.

Is it suitable for fine hair? Yes. Your stylist will choose lightweight formulas that do not weigh hair down or flatten its volume.

Do I need to do anything before the treatment? Nothing special. Come with hair free of styling products, and if you have recently coloured it at home or at another salon, let your stylist know.

How to keep the effect at home

  1. Use a gentle sulphate-free shampoo and always follow with conditioner or a mask.
  2. Apply heat protection before using a flat iron or hairdryer.
  3. Do not brush wet hair roughly - start from the ends.
  4. Protect your hair from the sun in summer: a hat or a product with a UV filter.
  5. Trim the ends every 2-3 months - repair cannot "glue" hair that has already split.

Not sure where to start - colour or repair? Book a consultation: your stylist will look at your hair and suggest a plan so the colour looks beautiful and the hair stays healthy.
