How to choose makeup and hair for an event: day, evening, photo shoot
A wedding, prom, office party, birthday or photo shoot - at an important event you want to look flawless and feel confident all evening. Professional makeup and hair styling take care of both. Here is how to choose your look and prepare so the result truly delights you.
Start with the type of event
The first thing to tell your artist is where and when the event will take place. Almost everything depends on it: the intensity of the makeup, how long-wearing the products need to be and even the hairstyle.
- Daytime or outdoor event. Daylight is honest and bright, so makeup should be lighter: radiant skin, soft shades, neat eyeliner or a gently blended eye. Heavy contouring looks harsh in the sun.
- Evening event indoors. Richer shades, a smoky eye, bold lips and fuller-coverage base all work here - artificial light "eats" some of the colour.
- A long event. If you have 8-10 hours ahead, your artist will use long-wear products and setting, and suggest what to bring for touch-ups.
Makeup for photos and video
The camera sees differently from the eye. A few rules help you look as good in photos as in real life:
- a matte or satin base instead of a strong glow - to avoid shine from the flash;
- slightly more defined brows and eyes than in everyday makeup - they "fade" in photos;
- go easy on large glitter and pearl finishes: in pictures they can emphasise fine lines;
- moisturised lips - dry lips show up in photos immediately.
Hair: from the dress to the weather
The hairstyle is chosen together with the whole look: the neckline, accessories, earrings and even the weather matter. An open back and neck call for an updo, while a minimalist dress pairs well with voluminous curls. If the event is outdoors, your stylist will take wind and humidity into account and make the hold more secure.
How to prepare for your visit
- Skin. Do not experiment with new products or facials in the days before the event - irritation is hard to hide. The night before: moisturiser and sleep.
- Brows. Have your brows shaped and tinted 2-5 days before the event, not on the day itself.
- Hair. Most styles hold better on hair washed the evening before rather than an hour before your visit. Check with your stylist what is best for your particular style.
- Clothes. Wear a shirt or something that buttons up so you do not have to pull it over your head afterwards.
- References. Save 2-3 photos of looks you like and a photo of your outfit - it helps your artist understand your taste.
What to tell your artist
Be honest about how you usually wear makeup and what you dislike: eyeliner, bold lips, false lashes. The look should enhance you, not turn you into someone else. Also mention sensitive skin, allergies or contact lenses.
How to make your look last all evening
Even the most long-wearing makeup needs a little support. Bring the lipstick or gloss your artist used, blotting papers and a compact powder - that is enough for a quick touch-up. Try not to touch your face or rub your eyes. If dancing and heat are on the agenda, ask your artist for waterproof mascara and a stronger setting.
For your hair, avoid overloading it with extra pins and hairspray "just in case": your stylist will choose the hold to suit your hair texture and the length of the event. A few hairpins in your bag will not hurt, though.
Frequently asked questions
How long do makeup and hair take? It depends on the complexity of the look. Allow plenty of time - it is better to arrive at your event relaxed than in a rush. The administrator will give you the exact time when you book.
Can I bring my own makeup? Yes, especially if you have sensitive skin and know which products work for you. Your artist will take them into account.
Should I have a trial before my wedding? For a wedding or another very important event, yes - discuss it with your artist in advance. That way you can calmly try a few options and see how the look photographs.
How does makeup work with false lashes? False lashes can make your eyes more striking, but in photos lashes that are too long sometimes cast shadows under the eyes. Your artist will choose a length that looks natural.
What if I have sensitive skin? Mention it when you book. Do not try new products in the days before the event, and your artist will choose gentle products and prep your skin before applying base.
