Lash lift: how it works, how long it lasts and how to care for your lashes

A lash lift is for anyone who wants defined eyes without daily mascara or extensions. Your own lashes are curled, look longer and, after tinting, darker too. Here is how it works and what to do to make the effect last as long as possible.

What a lash lift is

During the treatment the artist places your lashes on a special silicone rod and then applies formulas in stages that give the lashes a curl right from the root. Finally, the lashes receive a nourishing treatment. A lift is usually combined with a tint: even fair tips become visible and your eyes look as if you have just put on mascara.

Important: a lash lift works with your natural lashes. It does not add more of them, but it shows off everything you have - and it looks natural.

Who it suits

• straight or downward-pointing lashes that "disappear" without mascara;
• anyone who does not want extensions but wants defined eyes;
• glasses wearers: curled lashes do not touch the lenses;
• holidays, the beach and sport - no running mascara.

The treatment is not done if you have eye inflammation, conjunctivitis or a stye, or straight after eye surgery. If you have sensitive eyes or allergies, be sure to tell your artist in advance.

How the treatment works

You lie with your eyes closed - it is painless, and many clients even doze off. The artist cleans the lashes, chooses the rod size for their length and the curl you want, applies the formulas and then the tint and conditioning treatment. It takes about an hour on average.

Aftercare for the first 24 hours

The first 24 hours matter most: the formula is still setting and the curl is easy to disturb.

1. Keep your lashes dry and do not wash around your eyes.
2. Do not use mascara or makeup remover.
3. Do not rub your eyes and try not to sleep face-down.
4. Skip the sauna, the pool and intense workouts.

Ongoing care

• Brush your lashes with a spoolie in the morning.
• Avoid waterproof mascara - it is hard to remove without rubbing.
• Remove makeup gently and avoid oil-based products for the first few days.

How long it lasts and how often to repeat

The effect lasts 4-8 weeks on average, depending on how quickly your lashes renew. They shed and grow back gradually, so the lift fades unnoticeably, without a sharp line. Repeat the treatment no more often than every 6-8 weeks so your lashes have time to renew.

Lash lift or extensions?

Extensions add length and volume with synthetic fibres, but need refills every 2-3 weeks and careful handling: no sleeping face-down, no rubbing your eyes, no oil-based products. A lash lift works only with your own lashes - it will not give a "doll-like" effect, but it looks natural, needs no refills and does not weigh your lashes down.

If you value a natural look, spend a lot of time at a computer, wear contact lenses or glasses, or simply do not want to think about your lashes every day, a lift with a tint is the more convenient option.

How to prepare

• Come without mascara or eye makeup - or allow time for it to be removed.
• If you wear contact lenses, bring your case: lenses need to be taken out during the treatment.
• Avoid oil-based products around your eyes the day before - formulas set less well on oily lashes.
• Do not use an eyelash curler on the day of the treatment.

Does a lash lift damage lashes? Not if the intervals are respected. The formulas are gentle and lashes get a nourishing treatment at the end. Just do not repeat it more often than every 6-8 weeks.

Can I wear mascara after a lash lift? Yes, after the first 24 hours. But most clients find they no longer need mascara - especially when the lift is combined with a tint.

What if my lashes are short? A lift enhances short lashes too: the curl from the root visually "opens up" the eyes. Your artist will choose a smaller rod.

Is it a good idea before a holiday? Yes, it is one of the best times. Book it a few days before you travel so the first 24 hours of aftercare pass calmly at home.
