When to see a cosmetologist: skin care at every age

Many people think a cosmetologist is only needed once wrinkles appear. In fact, doctors advise getting to know your skin much earlier: it is easier to prevent problems than to fix them later. Here is when to book your first consultation and how skin care changes with age.

There is no "right" age - only your skin's needs

Many dermatologists recommend a first visit in your 20s or early 30s as a baseline. The doctor will assess your skin type and condition, recommend a basic routine and explain what to watch out for. But a reason to book can come up at any age.

Signs you should not wait with

  • breakouts that last for months or leave marks;
  • redness, flaking or stinging after products you normally use;
  • pigmentation spots that have become more visible;
  • enlarged pores and oily shine that bother you every day;
  • dryness and tightness that moisturiser does not relieve;
  • moles that have changed colour, size or shape - see a dermatologist without delay.

Skin care at different ages

Under 25. The essentials are proper cleansing, light hydration and sun protection. If breakouts bother you, do not try to "dry out" your skin with harsh products - it often makes things worse. One consultation is a better investment.

25-35. Skin recovers more slowly, and the first expression lines and dullness may appear. This is when antioxidants, acids or retinoids are added - but they are best chosen with a specialist, as they do not suit everyone.

Over 35. Firmness decreases, facial contours change, and pigmentation and wrinkles become more visible. Home care remains the foundation, while professional treatments help maintain skin quality.

What happens at the first consultation

The doctor will ask about your routine, lifestyle, any chronic conditions and medication you take, examine your skin and explain what is going on. You will get home-care recommendations and, if needed, a treatment plan. Bring a list of the products you use - or just take photos of them.

The basic routine everyone needs

  1. Gentle cleansing morning and evening - without that "squeaky" feeling.
  2. Moisturiser suited to your skin type - even oily skin needs it.
  3. SPF 30 or higher every morning - whatever the weather or season. It is the most effective way to protect your skin from premature ageing and pigmentation.
  4. Sleep, water and removing makeup before bed - obvious, but it works.

Common home-care mistakes

Skin often "rebels" not because of too little care but because of too much. Here is what we see most often:

  • Too many active products at once. Acids, retinoids and scrubs in one routine can damage the skin barrier - hence redness and flaking.
  • Harsh cleansing. A "squeaky clean" feeling means protective lipids have been washed away along with the dirt.
  • Squeezing spots. It almost always leaves marks and can spread inflammation.
  • SPF only at the beach. UV rays affect your skin all year round, even on cloudy days and through windows.
  • Using what works for a friend. What works wonders on someone else's skin may not suit yours.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a cosmetologist and a dermatologist? A dermatologist is a doctor who diagnoses and treats skin conditions. A cosmetologist helps with care and aesthetic concerns. When a specialist is medically trained as both, they see both the aesthetic and the medical side of a problem.

How often should I see a cosmetologist? It is individual. Some people only need a consultation once a season to adjust their routine, while others need a course of treatments. The doctor will draw up a plan after an examination.

Should I come without makeup? Ideally, yes - it makes it easier for the doctor to assess your skin. If that is not possible, makeup can be removed at the studio.

Is summer or winter better for treatments? Many treatments can be done all year round. But those that make skin more sensitive to the sun are usually planned for autumn and winter. The doctor will tell you what is suitable right now.

Can I come just for a consultation? Yes. A consultation is the best first step to understand your skin and avoid spending money on products that do not suit you.

Why medical training matters

Skin is an organ, and many cosmetic concerns are linked to hormones, diet, stress or illness. That is why treatments at NV Stars are performed by a cosmetologist and dermatologist with a medical degree. What matters most to us is healthy skin, natural beauty and choosing the right treatments for each client. The price depends on the treatment - please check with the administrator.
